02 · Why this exists

Small-business finance has been stuck between two bad options.

Most owners pick a side and live with the trade-off. We think there's a third one.

Option 01
Outsource everything.

Expensive. Often opaque. You get reports, but not necessarily understanding. The books leave with the firm.

$$$ monthly Opaque Dependent
Option 02
DIY it.

Cheaper, but time-consuming, inconsistent, and risky when the setup is wrong. Mistakes compound quietly until tax season.

03 · What we build

A financial system, built around how your SMB actually runs.

Seven components. Handcrafted to your business, Yours to keep.

01
Accounting setup

A chart of accounts that fits your business, structured so the numbers will mean something to you.

Handcrafted ledger
02
Automated bookkeeping

Bank feeds, transaction rules, and reconciliation workflows that handle the repetitive work without you watching.

Your service software, payment processor, and payroll wired to the books so revenue lands clean.

Owner snapshot

A tailored-to-you output that shows the numbers you actually need to make decisions in a format you can understand.

05
Monthly close rhythm

A simple checklist for the close. What to do/not do, what to review, what to flag, so the books stay clean.

04 · How it works

Workshop. Craft. Teach. Maintain.

Four phases over four weeks. We build it, walk you through it, and stay long enough to make sure it holds. We only maintain it if you want us to.

Step 01
Workshop.

We sit with you and the books — your current tools, your workflows, your pain points, your goals. We map what's working and what's not. No proposals yet.

Week 1
Step 02
Craft.

We design and implement the system — accounting setup, automations, integrations, dashboard. Done in your books, not a demo environment.

Weeks 2–3
Step 03
Teach.

We walk you through every piece of it. Live, recorded, and written. You leave knowing what to do every month and why.

Week 4
OPTIONAL
Maintain.

We keep the system current as your business evolves. Office hours, a monthly check-in, and rule updates as new transactions surface. Close review for the first three months, quarterly after that.

05 · Fit

Built for owners who want to understand their numbers, without doing everything manually.

We're a system builder, not a finance department. Stacksmith is a fit for some owners, and squarely not for others.

BEST FIT IF

You want to understand and control your own books, not outsource them.

  • +Run a small service business — 1 to 25 people.
  • +Want to learn by doing and truly know your numbers.
  • +Want cleaner books and clearer visibility into cash, revenue, and margin.
  • +Want to operate the system yourself (with automations) so you can understand your business.
NOT IDEAL IF

You want someone else to handle the books each month.

  • Want someone to take over bookkeeping every month.
  • Need tax preparation, filing, or audit defense.
  • Have complex inventory, multi-entity, or specialized accounting needs.
  • Want CFO or advisory services rather than a system to run.
  • Are looking for the cheapest possible bookkeeping subscription.
06 · The thesis
Your numbers should make you a better operator.

Most owners don't need a finance department. They need to know what's happening in the business. Where cash is going, whether revenue is growing, whether labor and materials are under control, what needs attention this month.

We build the system that makes those answers easy to see. Not dashboards as theatre. Not insights that need a translator. The kind of numbers a serious operator can look at on a Tuesday and act on by Wednesday.

We build the system. You run the business.
07 · Who's behind this

Built by someone who has lived both sides of the problem.

Stacksmith was founded by Matt McMichen, a former CPA and exited small-business operator who built and scaled Margin CFO, a bookkeeping and fractional CFO firm serving startups and small businesses.

After years of helping companies make sense of their numbers — and using simple financial tools to run and successfully exit his own business — Matt started Stacksmith to help small business owners get the financial clarity they need without DIY-ing their finances or investing more than they can afford on traditional outsourcing.
